Within the framework of the 103rd Session of the International Labour Conference ILO

Gerardo Martinez, Foreign Affairs Secretary of the Republic of Argentina CGT, Member of the ILO´s Governing Body and General Secretary of Building Workers Union UOCRA, was appointed Vice-President for the Americas Workers’ Group, within the framework of the 103rd Session of the International Labour Conference ILO which is held in Geneva, Switzerland.

When Mr. Martinez was appointed, it was highlighted his career as a union leader and his permanent and plural commitment in the defense of the workers’ rights, both at the national and at the international level.

After his appointment, in a media statement, Gerardo Martínez appreciated the role that the ILO plays and warned that, "Due to the process of globalization, some countries claim without any concealment that the ILO makes no sense. Some of the actors of power who support the process of globalization, attempt to minimize the value and content that the ILO promotes, which represents a true alarm for many people". Accordingly, he later argued that "we must be smart to deal with this and take on the unavoidable need of updating and reconverting this tripartite labour body of global nature, enhancing its role and making a key institutional actor to achieve the objective of consolidating the workers’ rights worldwide, the fair redistribution of wealth and the globalization of social justice as promoted and seeked by our Pope Francis".
