CÓRDOBA – CONFERENCE ON WORKERS MOVEMENT AND ADDICTIONS

  • UOCRA MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM OF PREVENTION OF ADDICTIONS ACCOMPANIED FATHER PEPE DI PAOLA IN THIS MEETING

In the city of Córdoba, UOCRA Multidisciplinary Team of Prevention of Addictions, in line with the objective of establishing ties with other entities, participated in a Conference on "Workers Movement and Addictions - A New Challenge-" in charge of Priest José María "Pepe" Di Paola.

Over 150 union representatives, among them Córdoba CGT Secretary-General , José Phien, SEP Secretary Gustavo Luna and UOCRA Córdoba Secretary-General Nestor Chavarría, attended the meeting.
During the Conference, Father PEPE referred to social mainstreaming issues linked to the consumption of drugs and other substances, claiming that they are not a problem that only reaches villas and the most vulnerable social sectors but it was extended to the whole country and in different areas including the world of work and pointed out that we must organize ourselves in the community and understand drugs as a fundamental problem to fight and eradicate and therefore, must be addressed as a matter of State with clear and continuing policies.
Because this reality is not tackled with sufficient importance by the State, it is that the Church asked to be declared the state of emergency to put drugs issues as a priority thus force institutions and Governments to work together and in an articulated way.

"There is neither institution nor organizations outside the scope of drug problem and claim the State a national emergency may take advantage of initiatives and actions which already exist and which are unconnected to stimulate creativity to deal with addictions," said Father Pepe.
He also highlighted the role of union delegates and stressed the importance of being specifically trained to assist workers who need it in different areas of work
In response to one of the questions asked by an attendee related to trade union work, he stressed the work and policies that Gerardo Martínez has been carrying out in UOCRA.
At the end of the meeting, it was signed a "Declaration of Cooperation Project between Cordoba CGT and the National Socio-Pastoral Against Addictions", by Cordoba CGT Secretary-General and Father Pepe. The project aims at generating political actions aimed at providing deep solutions to this issue and can be implemented in the short term to provide more effective and articulated responses between both institutions.
